Increasing air pollution concerns in India has ringed the bells for one and all of the country and the government seems in a hurry to take some corrective measure to try & control air pollution. As a result of the concern the government is proposing the phasing out of commercial vehicles in order to keep a check on vehicular pollution. Today there are more than 3.5 crore heavy commercial vehicles plying on Indian roads when seen to a total of 18 crore registered vehicles in India.
As per the proposal, two-axle mini trucks are taken off the road after 12 years, multi-axle vehicles after 15 years and trailers after 25 years. As per a top ministry official this announcement will be made public soon & will also cover private vehicles.
As per the proposal private vehicles will be allowed to ply on the roads till they comply with the pollution & fitness norms however as for the commercial vehicles the criteria strictly remains the same of its age. Government decided to exclude private vehicles from the proposal as they ply less when compared with the commercial vehicles & the later deteriorate faster than the private vehicles.

The proposal is attracting some criticism as the pundits’ thinks that government is acting like a marketing tool for vehicles manufacturers. They cite that the government should try & fix the faulty engines supplied by manufacturers. They also state that these manufacturers should also clearly state the life of vehicle which will help customers taking an informed buying decision. Some experts also pointed out that a hasty decision in this regard can have negative consequences on small entrepreneurs.
With these sudden proposals coming from the government we can clearly see that the government is in full swing to turn the things around but at what cost has to be identified & discussed at a panel of experts.
