Vehicle theft is
something not unknown to people residing in the cities and states of India.
However what’s shocking is to find out how frequently these thefts take place
in our neighborhood. In the latest figures released by NCRB (National
Crime Records Bureau) in Uttar Pradesh a vehicle is stolen in every 15
minutes.
This data shows a steep
increase of 33.9% in the past five years. According to NCRB, with 34,480
automobile thefts, UP reported second highest number of such cases in the
country in 2016, compared to 22,773 in the state in 2012. In 2015, the 29,846
vehicles thefts were reported while in 2014 it was 29,561.
The national capital is
also the theft capital of the country where the state reported theft of 38,644
vehicles in 2016, followed by Maharashtra which reported third highest 22,435
thefts of vehicles followed by Rajasthan 17,544 and Madhya Pradesh 15,878.
Thieves have become
smarter as they use latest technologies gadgets to override the modern
anti-theft systems. “Not only do they carry duplicate electronic keys but can
also neutralize engine control modules (on-board computers) in fuel-injected
vehicles in a few minutes. Also thieves need only few hours to dispose a stolen
vehicle. Often a vehicle is taken to nearest salvage yard where all parts of
the vehicle are dismantled and sold separately leaving no clue to trace stolen
vehicle.
