Inspection Guide: What To Inspect While Purchasing A Pre-Owned Tractor

Purchasing a tractor is a big task for a farmer, whose livelihood depends on the farm for which the tractor is being bought. Purchasing the right tractor is very important and if you are going to own a used tractor, then it is even more essential to purchase the right tractor after inspecting it thoroughly.

Shriram Automall is the right place for these people, as they are the leaders of used vehicle industry and allows you to inspect every vehicle and equipment before you bid on it. Purchasing a used vehicle is an easy exercise if you do with Shriram Automall. So here are the tips which will guide to for inspection of a pre-owned Tractor.

1. ExteriorsLooks of the tractor are very important as it is considered if it looks maintained, it is maintained. Dents, peeling paint, cracked or bulging tires are indications that a tractor was not stored well. It depends on the tractor model that how much of the cost will be incurred.

Before taking any final decision, check the depth of tire and compare it to the actual depth measurement provided by the manufacturer.

2. The CabOpen the door of the cab and take a look inside. Dirt and mud inside the cab are the signs of improper maintenance. Check how many hours of operation the tractor has already performed. Remember that some of the tractors have up to 4,000-5,000 operating hours but they are still in a very good shape because they have been cared properly.

3. Engine

Like other equipment, start the tractor & lift the hood up, let it run and check for any signs of leakage from the engine, hoses or the hydraulics. When the machine is switched off, remove the air filter. Air filters must be replaced every 100-200 hours, 300-400 hours for in cab filters. Regularly replaced air filter does not appear dirty.

4. Articulation Point

Conduct a both visual and operational inspection of the articulation point. It is the major moving of the tractor so it should always be greased. Also check for metal shards which are the signs of wear & tear.

5. Power Take-Off Shaft

Any farm that has a mechanical drive -grain carts, manure spreaders, augers, etc. - will require a functioning shaft. Firstly ensure that the PTO has proper specification of the attachments that you will need to run. It is better to acquire a tractor that has more of what you need.  The end result will be the improved fuel economy in the field and the potential to handle any large jobs that could come up as your operation expands or changes.

Keep in mind that repairs to the PTO are very costly as the tractor's rear end, & the rear axle as well, needs to be removed for the access.

6. The Hydraulic Power

Look for the leaks and poor seals while inspecting for hydraulics, possible signs that damage to the outlets or hydraulic tank may exist. Consider what kinds of attachments you should be running while inspecting the hydraulic outlets and auxiliary/return lines ensure the tractor has the appropriate number of outlets & lines for what you need to run now and a year from now.

7. Maintaining The Records

It is recommended to keep maintenance logs, maintenance logs, inspection lists, work orders and other supporting documents. Make sure to ask for these documents from the seller. These documents prove to be valuable insight into how often and what types repairs were performed.
