Heavily increasing smog (smoke + fog) this winter & pollution in the capital of India, New Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) has contrived judicial bodies & the government to take some strong steps. Recently the AAP led state government passed odd-even rule under which the cars will run on alternate days depending on the last digit of the registration no. Currently, the latest news that has hit Delhi & NCR is that the commercial vehicles which were bought 10 years back i.e. before 2005 are going to be banned as well. The Apex court of India has given this verdict to control the dangerously increasing level of pollution.
The necessity to frame such a policy was felt because of rising pollution in the country due to presence of old vehicles which are based on aged technology. The ban, however, could be beneficial for commercial vehicle manufacturers as there are approximately 40,000 - 50,000 vehicles running in NCR region registered in or before 2005. To support this initiative, Government will provide tax exemption of Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000. Also, Manufacturers will offer discount up to Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 to holder of old vehicle on purchase of new vehicle, so that overall benefit will be up to Rs 2.5 lakh. It has also been urged that manufactures to build Euro V and Euro VI compliant vehicles as it has been noticed that pollution is a big concern for India. It has also been stressed upon the requirement to build bio-fuel based buses at reasonable prices in addition to promoting ethanol & bio-diesel.
With this ban coming into play, truck makers and industry is very hopeful of getting the sales revived for the recovering market in India and some experts also believe that LCV segment would also get a chance of revival. Survey has also showed that NCR region is accountable for 5% of total national sales when it comes down to MCV’s & HCV’ and with so many trucks going to be declared not suitable for Delhi roads, the industry is definitely enthusiastic about the sales numbers.
