Let’s Start with the Engine

•    The first and foremost tip is to check engine oil level regularly. Normally, this has to be checked every 5000 km or after every 6 months. Make sure you choose the right grade of engine oil for your car.

•    Check the coolant level regularly. It is usually recommended to check on every 40,000km. It is also recommended to change the oil filter on every oil change process or after the first 8000 km for improved performance and smooth functioning of the vehicle.

•    Generally an air filter is recommended to be changed after 10,000 km, and it mainly depends on the amount of grime it gathers. Changing the filter at the periodic intervals prescribed by the manufacturer is always a good option.

•    The spark plugs are one of the important parts of the combustion system of car. They allow smooth performance of engine by compressing fuels using the electric spark. Spark plugs wear down progressively and need to be changed on a regular basis to get improved fuel economy and better performance.

Battery is Important Too

Even though modern batteries need not to be checked regularly, but at the same time it is very important to keep a check on the power supply part to prevent decreasing its life.

Some car battery needs water; in that case, make sure the electrolyte level is at the correct mark. Refill it with distilled water and in no way use bottle or tap water.

What about the Tires?

•    Tires and Wheels are the most affected parts and tires are needed to be examined often to check for cracks and irregular wear and tear. Using tires beyond the limit could turn unsafe.

•    Secondly, checking tire pressure and maintaining manufacturer recommended pressure is a very important aspect. Checking regularly, not only helps in achieving best results in handling, comfort & road grip, but also helps in giving good fuel-economy.

•    To keep tires in optimum condition, they need to be rotated at the prescribed km to make sure they wear down evenly.

•    Wheels are prone to dirt and dust. Proper cleaning agents should be applied with some damp sponge to remove this brake grime.

Also, Brakes and Shock Absorbers

•    Though most of the braking problems develop gradually rather abruptly, automobile experts recommend that braking system must be checked after every 16,000km.

•    Brake fluid level should be checked every month and the reservoir must be refilled to the suggested mark.

•    Shock absorbers reduce bounce and whenever passenger hits a bump or goes under difficult track, it absorbs them smoothly giving comfortable ride. Checking these shock absorbers is easy, grasp the corner of your car’s bumpers and press down as hard as you can. Repeat the procedure on each corner. Observe it carefully, if it jumps back and goes down again, then it’s fine but if it is moving continuously, the shocker is no longer effective and need to be replaced.

So follow these tips regularly and keep your car’s condition up to date. Maintaining your car will be very easy with these Do It Yourself guide and will cost you less as when you go to the mechanic for huge repairing work.
